Black Streaks on a Louisiana Roof: What They Are and What Actually Removes Them

The dark streaks running down a Baton Rouge or Prairieville roof are algae, not dirt or mold. What Gloeocapsa magma is, whether it damages shingles, and why pressure washing is the wrong fix.

If you have watched dark streaks creep down your roof over the past year or two, and your neighbor’s roof a few doors down picked up the same pattern around the same time, you are looking at algae, not dirt and not mold. It has a name: Gloeocapsa magma, a blue-green bacteria that has adapted to live on asphalt shingles specifically because it feeds on the limestone filler mixed into them. It spreads by airborne spores, which is exactly why it shows up on one house and then the next one over within a season or two. It streaks because rain washes the colony downhill as it grows, carrying it in the direction water travels across the slope.

South Louisiana is close to ideal territory for it. Gloeocapsa magma needs sustained moisture and warmth to establish, and Baton Rouge and Prairieville supply both for most of the year. That is also why the streaking concentrates where you would expect: north-facing slopes, and any section of roof shaded by trees or a neighboring structure, because those areas hold moisture the longest after rain or morning dew. A roof in full sun on a south-facing slope can stay nearly clean while the north side of the same house is heavily streaked, and that difference alone is a useful clue that you are dealing with algae rather than a shingle defect.

Is it actually hurting the roof?

For most homeowners, in the early stages, this is a curb-appeal problem more than a structural one. A roof that is otherwise sound and simply has streaking is not leaking because of the algae, and the streaking by itself does not mean the shingles have failed.

That said, it is not nothing, and it is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing outright. A dark algae colony absorbs more heat than a clean shingle surface and holds moisture against it longer, and shingles that stay warmer and damper for longer periods age faster. Left to grow for years without treatment, heavy colonization is associated with granule loss, and the granules are what protect the asphalt underneath from direct sun. Once a shingle starts shedding granules in the areas under algae growth, that patch of roof is aging faster than the rest of it. So the honest answer is: mostly cosmetic early on, genuinely worth addressing before it becomes a contributor to shortened shingle life.

Algae, moss, and lichen are not the same problem

People use these words interchangeably, and the differences matter for what you do next.

Algae is what produces the classic black or dark green streaking. It sits on the surface of the shingle and does not have roots or a plant structure. That is also why it is the easiest of the three to remove without damaging what is underneath.

Moss is a true plant, and it shows up as raised, cushion-like green patches rather than streaks, usually where a roof stays shaded and damp for extended stretches. Moss is the one that does real mechanical damage: it grows a root-like structure that works under shingle edges and lifts them, which opens a path for water. Moss needs to come off, and the growth pattern underneath it usually needs a closer look afterward.

Lichen is a combination organism, part fungus and part algae, and it is the toughest of the three to deal with because it bonds directly into the shingle mat rather than sitting on top of it. It shows up as crusty, flat, gray-green or orange patches, often with a texture you can feel is different from the shingle around it. Lichen is the one most likely to need professional treatment rather than a simple wash, because scraping or aggressive cleaning to remove it can take the granules and the mat with it.

If what you are seeing is dark streaks running downhill with the water pattern, you are almost certainly looking at algae, which is the most common of the three here and the one with the most straightforward fix.

Why pressure washing is the wrong tool

This is worth being direct about: a pressure washer is the single worst thing you can put against an asphalt shingle roof. The concentrated force strips granules off the shingle surface, and once granules are gone in a spot, they do not come back. That bare patch of asphalt then ages far faster than the rest of the roof, so a homeowner trying to clean the roof can end up shortening its life more than the algae ever would have. Pressure washing an asphalt shingle roof can also void the shingle manufacturer’s warranty outright, because most warranties specifically exclude damage caused by high-pressure cleaning.

The industry standard is a low-pressure soft wash: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure, given time to work, and rinsed at a pressure gentle enough not to disturb the granule surface. It is slower than blasting the roof with a pressure washer, and that is the point. It kills the algae without taking the shingle’s protective surface with it.

One more thing worth saying plainly. A roof with algae growth is often a roof with moisture sitting on it, which means it can be slick, and reaching the areas that need attention usually means working on a slope from a ladder or the roof itself. That is not a job to take on without the right harness, footing, and equipment. It is worth having someone who does this for a living handle it rather than treating it as a weekend project.

Preventing it from coming back

Once a roof has been cleaned, the algae can return unless something is done to discourage it. The proven low-maintenance approach is a strip of zinc or copper installed at the ridge, run along the peak of the roof. Every time it rains, trace amounts of metal wash down the slope with the water, and that runoff is inhibitory to algae growth on the surface it passes over. It will not necessarily protect every square foot equally, since coverage depends on how the water spreads on the way down, but it is a real, low-cost line of defense that keeps working with no attention required after installation.

The other answer: algae-resistant shingles at replacement time

If a roof is already old enough that replacement is on the table, or if algae keeps coming back no matter what is done to it, algae-resistant shingles are worth asking about. These are a shingle category, not a brand, built with a portion of the granules coated in copper. As rain moves across the surface, those granules release a small amount of copper with each rain event, and that ongoing release is what keeps a new colony from establishing in the first place. It is a built-in, passive version of the same zinc-and-copper principle used in ridge strips, just baked into the shingle itself rather than added on afterward.

Heavy, long-term algae growth is also sometimes a sign that a roof is simply getting old, especially if it shows up alongside other wear: granule loss you can see collecting in the gutters, curling at the tab edges, or a roof that is already past the middle of its expected service life.
